Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

Here are some answers to questions that we are frequently asked.

What health checks have been performed on the dam and the sire to ensure they have no hereditary defects?

Both the dam and the sire for our puppies have had all of the Vizsla breed recommended health checks to minimize the likelihood of hereditary defects in our puppies.  Breed recommended health screening for Vizslas includes testing for hip dysplasia, thyroid, and eye disorders.  In addition, both the dam and the sire have also been screened for elbow dysplasia.  Results from these tests are publicly available on the Orthepedic Foundation for Animals website by searching the dam and sire's registration number.  We encourage our buyers to do their homework and independently verify these results.

What do you do to ensure the health of your vizsla puppies?

The health of our puppies is of the utmost importance to us and we want to make sure that our buyers go home with a healthy puppy.   This starts with making sure that the parents are in good health and there is a healthy family history.  After the puppies are born and throughout the first 8 weeks of life, we take several steps to make sure puppies go to their new homes healthy, and consult regularly with our veterinarian to ensure the puppies' health and well-being.

First, the puppies live in our home with us and we interact with them continuously throughout the day.  This close contact has a couple of benefits:

  1. It allows us to closely monitor them and quickly identify if any of them are sick or are failing to thrive.  Since we are so close with the puppies, we get to know their habits and personalities, so we are more able to recognize when one of the puppies isn't acting like themselves.

  2. The puppies are heavily socialized with people, which is critical during this first stage of their development.  This sets the foundation for a stable temperament, and prepares them to be well-adjusted and ready for more formal training when they go to their forever home.

In addition to the close contact we maintain with our puppies, we also have a general health and wellness check performed after they are born, as well as another health check performed before they go home.  These checks evaluate the puppies to ensure there is no evidence of any health problems by checking their bite, palate, heart, lungs, genitalia, and eyes.  The health checks also look for any signs of hernia.

One of the clearest signs that a puppy may be sick is if they are not eating or gaining weight, so in addition to the other safeguards we have in place, we also closely monitor our puppies' weight to ensure that the puppies are growing as expected.

Lastly, if there is any sign that one of our puppies may be sick or have a health issue, we will generally keep that puppy, rather than sending a sick puppy to a new home.

What is included in the price of your puppies?

All of our puppies come pre-registered with the AKC, micro-chipped with pre-registration in AKC Reunite, and up-to-date on all vaccinations.  We also provide their first deworming treatment and their tails will be docked with dewclaws removed.

Will the puppies be registered with the AKC? Will I have full ownership?

Yes, the puppies will be registered with the AKC. Generally, our puppies are transferred with full ownership rights, unless there is an explicit agreement with the new owner (which is discussed prior to transferring ownership).
